Le petit cahier dont les pages contenaient le seul manuscrit de ces vers fut un jour egare par le poete, et retrouve, par son confrere et ami, Coventry Patmore, dans un tiroir de toilette d'un appartement garni evacue par Tennyson. Enfin, au mois de juin 1850, quatorze ans apres l'achevement de l'oeuvre, In Memoriam parut, en un petit volume de 210 pages.
